With a new offering created specifically for students with special needs, the arts have a remarkable ability to bring people together—across generations, backgrounds, abilities and communities. That idea was on full display as organizations from throughout Seminole County gathered to celebrate the latest round of grant awards from the Seminole Cultural Arts Council (SCAC).

The Ritz and SCAC have maintained a long-standing partnership, with Arts Council funding supporting the theater’s summer camp programs for years. For the upcoming grant cycle, however, that partnership is helping the Ritz take an important new step: creating its first summer camp specifically designed for students with special needs. “We’re very excited,” Kathryn Townsend (Ritz Board President) told those gathered for the awards presentation. While SCAC has supported the theater’s camps for many years, this will be the first offering dedicated specifically to special-needs students. The program is being developed with a curriculum created for the new camp, with approximately five special-needs educators from Seminole, Brevard and Volusia county schools expected to assist.

For the Ritz, the program expands on a larger philosophy that has become central to its educational work: the stage should be a place where everyone has an opportunity to participate. The Ritz was one of many organizations recognized during the SCAC presentation, and the range of funded programs illustrated just how broadly the arts can touch a community.

Grant recipients represented visual arts, music, cultural history, public art, education and inclusive programming. Funding will help put art supplies into Seminole County classrooms, repair instruments for the Hagerty High School Band, bring arts experiences to students and senior communities, support cultural celebrations, introduce children to blues music and expand programs serving individuals with varying abilities. SCAC leaders repeatedly emphasized that the goal is not simply to fund performances or exhibitions, but to help bring arts experiences to people who might otherwise have limited opportunities to encounter them. That mission was especially clear when discussing programs created for people with disabilities. During the presentation, representatives from another grant recipient described art as something that can “empower any individual” to become their best self. It is a philosophy closely aligned with what the Ritz hopes to accomplish through its new summer camp.

Instead of asking whether every student can fit into a traditional theater program, the new initiative creates a theatrical experience designed with those students in mind from the beginning. The SCAC grant program is also an example of how public and private investment can return directly to the community. Council leadership explained that a significant portion of its support comes through Seminole County funding, supplemented by State of Florida specialty license plate revenue and fundraising through public-private partnerships. Seminole County residents who purchase the state's arts specialty plate also help direct a portion of their annual registration fees back to arts programming within the county.

SCAC reported that approximately $54,000 in grants were distributed among 19 organizations this year, while this year's funding nearly doubled. Council leadership credited both county support and private fundraising with helping make that growth possible. For Sanford, several of those investments will be especially visible. In addition to the Ritz, SCAC announced support for Sanford Porchfest as it prepares for its 10th anniversary in 2027, the St. Johns River Festival of the Arts and the Community Improvement Association of Seminole County's work connected with historic Hopper Academy.
